Speaking of the decision, Football League, head of communications, John Nagle said: “The Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final gives supporters of League 1 and 2 clubs the opportunity to experience the thrill of reaching a domestic cup final.

“The Millennium Stadium has hosted some terrific finals in this competition over the last six seasons and we are delighted to be taking this match to Cardiff, once again.”

Cardiff has quickly built a fine pedigree of sporting finals over the last few years, including the FA and Carling Cups. It features the first retractable roof in the UK and has a maximum capacity of 74,500, which has already been achieved on several occasions. The UEFA five-star rated stadium has attracted over 1.3 million visitors a year since it opened in 1999.

Teresa Quinn, Johnstone’s sponsorship manager is delighted to be taking the final to Cardiff. She said: “The Millennium Stadium is a fantastic selection. Johnstone’s is committed to giving the fans a final to remember and we can’t think of a better location than Cardiff to do this. Cardiff has always been a fantastic trading place for Johnstone’s and we look forward to meeting both locals and visitors in April.”
