Bragging rights and local pride will be at stake for thousands of fans in the Football League, after a mouthwatering set of second round draws were made in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.
Soccer AM’s Helen Chamberlain and Max Rushden pulled out some plumb pairings live on Sky Sports 1 on Saturday, as the competition entered an intriguing new phase.
The headline grabbing ties include the all-Yorkshire affair between Rotherham and Leeds United, the North-Lincolnshire tussle between Scunthorpe and Grimsby Town, while Bury take on Stockport in a Lancashire clash.
Sky Sports is already getting excited about the Yorkshire tie and have agreed to screen it live on Wednesday October 8 (7.45pm kick-off), to underline the ever-growing interest in this year’s competition.
Meanwhile, in the southern section, holders MK Dons are back in the competition following a bye in round one.
They will take on AFC Bournemouth at home as they embark on their defence of the competition they won back in March.
Leicester City have been handed a home tie with Lincoln City, which will mark the first meeting between the sides since 1982, and Luton Town will look forward to some league respite with a home tie against Brentford.
Johnstone’s Paint Trophy sponsorship manager Teresa Hardwick said the draw, coupled with Sky’s live coverage, was the perfect follow-up to an enthralling first round.
She said: “Forty-four goals were netted in open play in round one, while attendances rose by a staggering 24 per cent on the same stage last year.
“Leeds United and Bradford City fans also wrote their teams into the record books with a 20,128 attendance at Elland Road, smashing the previous round one best.
“The competition has started with a bang, and the excitement levels continue to rise as the second round approaches, which is great news for everyone.”
