Rotherham paints the perfect picture

It might only be October, but the story of Rotherham United’s season already stretches into a number of intriguing chapters.

20 Oct 2008

The Millers’ tale has had just about everything from an initial points deduction to a string of giant killing successes.

And if you ask the club’s bosses how they would like the season’s narrative to end, they will give you a simple answer.

“We want to win the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy!”

Chief operating officer Paul Douglas is a huge fan of the competition and says the club is desperate to win a piece of silverware that just gets ‘stronger and stronger.’

“There is a clear shift in emphasis when it comes to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. It is as important to us as any other competition we are involved in and we would dearly love to win it.

“It has had an extremely positive effect on morale and the club certainly recognises this.”

Rotherham started the season with a 17 point deduction, but have already hauled back the deficit with a fantastic start to their League 2 season.

They have also supplemented their run to the area quarter finals of the JPT with some fine performances in the Carling Cup.

And if all that wasn’t enough, the side bid a tearful goodbye to their old Millmoor home and are getting used to life at Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium.

Paul added: “There will only be a small number of clubs who will get promoted, so instead of relying on blind loyalty, we want to get to Wembley for the fans.

“Make no mistake, the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy is getting stronger and stronger.

“You can see an imbalance of resources in the leagues, but this competition gives every participating team an equal chance of success.

“The days of fielding weaker teams are long gone, and we want to succeed for our fans.

“They haven’t had a great deal to cheer about in the last few years, so to give them a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy day to remember would be fabulous.”

Rotherham will be presented with their Ultra Team of the Round award for beating Leeds United 4-2.

The Millers will entertain Leicester City in the area quarter finals on the week commencing November 3.

Johnstone’s. Bringing colour to the beautiful game.
