It has provided fans throughout England and Wales with many hours of entertainment, with over 240,000 people coming to watch games during the competition.
In the run up to the final on March 30th 2008, the tournament saw 135 goals, 553 shots on target, 541 shots off target and an average of 2.81 goals per match. With 13 goals coming in the last 10 minutes we can appreciate that there were one or two nail biting moments along the way!
The first Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final at Wembley Stadium certainly didn’t disappoint and near on 60,000 fans packed into the amazing new setting to see
MK Dons win their first piece of club silverware, beating a plucky Grimsby Town 2-0.
With the new season upon us, we bid a fond farewell to Swansea City and Nottingham Forest, who were both promoted automatically to the Coca Cola Championship. Doncaster Rovers also prevailed in the play-offs, beating Leeds United 1-0.
The Yorkshire side were the holders of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in 2007, and are now looking forward to life in England’s second tier, proving that a good cup run can have a really positive impact on a club’s domestic campaign.
Where others succeed, unfortunately, some must fall but we give a huge welcome to Leicester City, Scunthorpe United and Colchester United.
We also say farewell to Wrexham and Mansfield Town who were relegated from League Two. In their place, we say hello to Exeter City and Aldershot Town who are two great clubs back where they belong.
The new Wembley stadium will again host the 2008/09 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final and we wish all clubs the very best in their quest to visit the hallowed turf and provide you with some wonderful memories.
