McCall enjoying a colourful cup run

Bradford City boss Stuart McCall could be forgiven for fearing the worst when his side prepared for another tilt at the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

November 2009

Sod’s Law was surely the phrase closer to his lips, as his team was drawn away at bogey side Rochdale in the first round.

The tie followed two years of similarly tough opening fixtures in the trophy, when the Bantams were handed unenviable trips to Leeds United and Doncaster Rovers in 2008 and 2007.

No wonder then, that the Bradford legend is enjoying an extended run in the competition this time around, as he savoured a brilliant 2-1 win at Spotland, followed by a penalty shoot-out win against Notts County in round two.

Both displays featured a series of gutsy, energetic performances from his players, who he has continued to praise as the season progresses.

Looking ahead to City’s area quarter final at home to Port Vale, McCall said: “We’ve had a tough time in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy for the last couple of years which has been a shame for us, as we are desperate to do well in it.

“We played some great stuff to get past Rochdale, who have been a bit of a bogey team for us at their place. Then to beat Notts County in the manner we did was a big morale booster for us all.

“The young fans in particular really enjoyed that one. It ended up being a fantastic atmsosphere. And with each game that goes by, you are always one stage closer to Wembley.

“Everybody is looking forward to the game against Port Vale. It will be a tough one, but it is a big opportunity for us.”

McCall is taking nothing for granted against a well drilled Vale side, who are unbeaten since boss Micky Adams’ infamous declaration to place all of his players on the transfer list (following a 3-1 defeat at Notts County in League 2).

“It seems to have worked well for Micky. They are doing well and we have a lot of respect for Micky and his team.

“I believe their club is putting on some free travel coaches for their fans on the night as well, so it promises to be a great atmosphere. And I’m sure our fans will be up for it too, judging by their response in the previous round.”

Bradford City tackle Port Vale on Tuesday November 10 at 7.45pm.
