A glut of goals and a touch of romance in round two

Some strong away performances, a glut of goals and a night of pure romance were all the talk of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy second round, where 13 sides moved to within four games of Wembley. The review of the action has to begin at Moss Rose, where Crewe Alexandra put near neighbours Macclesfield to the sword, winning 4-2 in some style.

The drama didn’t stop there either. For the first time in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, a player put through his own net twice, while another own goal and penalty was witnessed in a game of real excitement.

Crewe’s Pat Ada can ‘boast’ the unenviable achievement of bagging a brace of own goals, but his side was not to be denied as the Railwaymen steamed into the area quarter finals.

The fixture wasn’t the only one to feature a ruck of goals, with Huddersfield Town and Peterborough United involved in a five goal thriller.

With the home side 3-0 up at half time, not many inside the Galpharm Stadium would have given Posh a prayer of getting anything from the game.

However, a second half fightback with goals from Aaron McClean and Mark Little set up a nervy finish, which the Terriers withstood.

Huddersfield Town assistant manager Terry McDermott said: “Games in the cup are knock-out games and we have got aspirations to go to Wembley this year. That would be fantastic for the fans.

“We have seen what happened with Southampton last season. It is a great occasion and we are delighted to have won the game.”

As romance stories goes, nothing could get close to Carlisle United, who again displayed their love and affection for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Two goals down to an impressive Port Vale side and with time rapidly running out, last season’s trophy finalists were heading for an early exit from the competition.

But cometh the hour, cometh the man. Jason Price - a hero of the 2006 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy for Doncaster Rovers – came off the bench to level the tie and in a scene reminiscent to last year’s northern area final against Leeds, the game went to penalties.

The home side overcame the odds to progress to the Area Quarter Final stages, with a nailbiting 4-3 win. They can once again look forward to unfurling the huge Johnstone’s Paint Trophy inflatable banner from last season’s Wembley final that was presented to them by Johnstone’s before the game.

Meanwhile, live on the Sky TV cameras, another past finalist wasn’t so fortunate as MK Dons bowed out to Charlton Athletic.

In a game of high quality, the Addicks found themselves a goal down when Chadwick broke the deadlock for the 2008 winners, but tormentor-in-chief Kyel Reid inspired the away side, setting up Abbott and Wagstaff to seal the tie.

Elsewhere, a number of impressive away performances will give the Team of the Round judges something to think about.

Plymouth Argyle and Wycombe Wanderers both won 2-0 at Cheltenham Town and Colchester United respectively, while Exeter City went one better at Hereford, beating the Bulls 3-0.

Southend United looked particularly impressive in beating Barnet 3-1 at Underhill, although some home sides did get things their own way.

Swindon Town followed up their brilliant first round win at Southampton with a 2-0 defeat of Torquay United, Hartlepool were early winners against Bradford City (1-0), and Will Hoskins left it late for Bristol Rovers, netting in injury time to dispatch Aldershot by the same score.

And finally, the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy just wouldn’t be the same without a bit more penalty drama.

Bury beat Shrewsbury Town 6-5 from the spot, while Brentford held their nerve to beat Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road, by 5 penalties to 4.

The draw for the Area Quarter Finals will take place live on Soccer AM this Saturday October 9.

Johnstone’s. Bringing colour to the beautiful game.
