Mellor celebrates

Four-midable owls swoop for final area semi-final spot

Sheffield Wednesday boss Alan Irvine has targeted a trip to Wembley after his side sank Hartlepool 4-1 to reach the Northern Area semi-finals.

November 2010

Neil Mellor smashed the first hat-trick of his career and Gary Teale wrapped up the scoring as the Owls followed up their 5-2 FA Cup success at Southport with another thumping win.

Irvine said: “We wobbled once or twice but overall I thought it was a very good performance.

“That's two good performances with lots of goals in the last two games and that helps your confidence. I believe the competition is very important. It'd be great if we can go even further.

“We played some good football. We started the game well and got the early goal which is so vital in any game.”

The manager also heaped praise on Sheffield Wednesday man of the match Neil Mellor, who fired the Owls’ first hat-trick at Hillsborough since November 2003.

“Neil was excellent. When he plays like that he is a real threat to any defence and I was delighted to see him get his hat-trick.

“I took him off with 10 minutes to go so he could get a nice ovation from the crowd and bearing in mind we have another important game on Saturday.”

Johnstone's. Bringing colour to the beautiful game.
