Fun time Frankie in at number 2

After the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy unveiled its inaugural entry into its official Team of Five Finals, the competition is back to induct its first outfield player, in the shape of a firebrand full back from America.

May 2011

A panel of trophy experts have chosen the eleven most outstanding players to feature in the five finals played since 2007, ranging from Doncaster Rovers’ epic win in 2007 right through to Carlisle United’s in 2011.

Last week the trophy welcomed ex-MK Dons keeper Willy Gueret into its starting line-up, paving the way for a new entry every week.

And with this season’s final so fresh in the memory, we are pleased to revisit Carlisle United’s successful side and introduce a flaxen haired right back.

Every great side needs a steadying, calming influence at the back and in five finals, few looked more solid than Frankie.

The American right back had the unenviable task of shackling Brentford winger Miles Weston in the 2010/11 final, who set up both goals in his side’s decisive area final second leg win at Exeter City.

He did so with minimal fuss and epitomised the Cumbrians’ spirit and resolve at Wembley Stadium in beating a much fancied Brentford side 1-0.

Frankie’s rise to prominence in footballing world was a little less conventional than his peers, having been recommended by former West Ham defender Tony Gale when playing Sunday morning football.

He was given trials at Arsenal on the back of an impressive foray into the game, after moving to the country from America as a youngster.

While his time at Arsenal ultimately ended unsuccessfully, he embarked on a five year stint at Sheffield Wednesday, before arriving at Brunton Park last summer.

The fresh Cumbrian air has done him the world of good, as he made a full recovery from an ankle ligament injury to star for Greg Abbott’s men this campaign.

He said: “I am loving it. It has been a while since I was playing week in, week out, and long may it continue.

“It is probably the best dressing room I have ever been in; everybody’s in it together, there are no bad apples. It’s a great bunch of guys.”
