Irvine refuses to let Owls flap under pressure

Sheffield Wednesday boss Alan Irvine has told his side to start embracing any pressure that might begin to mount at Hillsborough, starting with their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy game against Hartlepool tonight.

November 2010

The likeable Scot currently sees his side lying just outside the play-off positions in League One and with a very real chance of progress into the latter stages of the trophy.

It is unsurprising that his team are the one huge scalp left in the trophy and even less of a shock to know that managing one of the biggest clubs in England comes at a price – pressure.

Irvine said: “There’s pressure against every team we play at Hillsborough. I never feel that the pressure is off. It is something that you have to be able to cope with and embrace, which we have to do.”

Wednesday welcome Hartlepool to Hillsborough tonight, who will be another team trying to put one over the illustrious club, just like Chesterfield were so close to doing in round two.

Irvine added: “From the very first kick, I have said that the competition is an extremely important one for us and one that we are desperate to do well in.

“If you look at the teams we have put out and the crowds that we have had, then you see the significance of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy to us.

“Getting to Wembley would be a fantastic occasion. I remember watching the Carlisle United v Southampton final last season and it looked like everybody had a fantastic day out.

“I’m quite sure that whoever makes the final again this season will find the entire day out terrific.”

Irvine also said that a good result was imperative for his players in order to keep building momentum, as seen in the two games after Nicky Weaver’s heroics against Chesterfield.

He added: “Good results in any competition breeds confidence. The more wins you get the more confidence people feel, so of course we are hoping that tonight’s game will help us along on that score too.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s game against Hartlepool kicks off at 7.30pm tonight.
