Jordan joy at Johnstone's award

Huddersfield Town star striker Jordan Rhodes has underlined his status as one of the hottest young properties in football, after scooping a prestigious Johnstone’s Paint Trophy goal of the season award.

May 2011

Hundreds of fans voted for the 21 year-old’s delicious 25 yard lob over Tranmere Rovers goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen in the area semi finals as the competition’s official ‘Ultimate Finish’ of the season.

It beat 125 other goals throughout the course of the campaign to earn the lofty accolade and completes a hugely impressive personal achievement for the youngster in this season’s trophy.

Rhodes was the joint top scorer overall with four goals and can now look forward to a sparkling piece of silverware for his mantel piece, which is destined to be followed by many more in the future.

Lifelong Huddersfield Town fan Bradley Peel was chosen at random as the winning supporter and will receive a Sony Playstation 3 console with latest Fifa game.

Rhodes’ strike (35 per cent) pipped Carlisle United defender Peter Murphy to the accolade (31 per cent) which is no mean feat, after Murphy volleyed the winning goal in the final of the trophy at Wembley in April.

Sponsorship manager Teresa Hardwick said: “Jordan has lit up the competition this season, so it is nice to see one of his efforts commemorated in this way.

“Our Ultimate Finish awards have been hugely popular this season with supporters. We have received thousands of votes throughout the course of the season which is exactly what we wanted when we came up with the initiative at the start of last season.

“We want fans to engage with us in as many ways as possible, which has certainly been the case with our Ultimate Finish awards – from the first round right the way through to the final.

“We have always said that the fans are the best judge of a good goal, and judging by Jordan’s effort away at Tranmere, they have got it spot on again.”
