Saints go marching out of Trophy!

When Swindon Town boss Danny Wilson told the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy he was relishing the task of facing holders Southampton in round one, boy did he mean it! The Robins thrashed last season’s winners 3-0 in a glorious away performance that has a ‘team of the round’ title written all over it.

An ecstatic Wilson said after the game: “It was not just the fact we’re through, it is the manner in which we are through.

“To a man we closed the game down very well and Dave’s only had one save to make, and to have that at St Mary’s is brilliant.

Vincent Pericard scored a brace in an impressive attacking display, with striker partner Charlie Austin notching the other goal.

Elsewhere, there were some notably other scalps in the competition, with a number of League Two sides upsetting their League One rivals.

Shrewsbury Town triumphed at Oldham Athletic 1-0, courtesy of Steve Leslie’s late effort, while Port Vale dumped out Rochdale at Vale Park 2-1 with goals from Marc and Justin Richards.

Chesterfield fully deserved their 2-1 win at the Banks’s Stadium against Walsall, while Accrington Stanley upset the form book at Tranmere Rovers, beating their opponents on penalties at Prenton Park.

The shocks weren’t confined to the northern section of the trophy either.

Torquay United’s brilliant league form was carried into the trophy as they won the bragging rights over neighbours Bournemouth in a penalty shoot-out win.

The big winners of the first round were Hartlepool, who crushed Northampton Town 4-0.

Evan Horwood, Antony Sweeney, Andy Monkhouse and Denis Behan plundered four goals in nine second half minutes.

Johnstone’s Paint Trophy sponsorship manager Teresa Hardwick said: “We expected some shocks in the first round of the trophy, but so many in one night was a surprise to us!

“We’ve seen another three penalty shoot-outs, another 26 goals, and some impressive displays by a number of clubs, so we can safely say we’ve kicked off the new season in style.”
