Swindon Town and Shrewsbury Town can soon boast some new pieces of silverware on their sideboards after scooping the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy’s Team of the Round awards.
While League Two promotion hopefuls Shrewsbury were dumping out Oldham Athletic in the northern section 1-0, Swindon Town were putting current trophy holders Southampton to the sword in emphatic fashion, winning 3-0 at St Mary’s.
A Johnstone’s Paint Trophy panel unanimously voted for the two clubs to win their prestigious accolades, courtesy of their headline grabbing performances.
The awards will be presented in the week commencing September 27, ahead of the clubs’ foray into round two, where Shrewsbury Town travel to face Bury and Swindon Town entertain Torquay United.
Johnstone’s Paint Trophy’s sponsorship manager Teresa Hardwick said: “The first round was littered with cup shocks, but we felt that Shrewsbury Town’s success at Boundary Park – against a team doing so well in League One – deserved special recognition.
“Meanwhile, Swindon Town’s result at Southampton was one of the biggest in the history of the trophy, having so comprehensively beaten the current holders. We couldn’t ignore that!
“Both Graham Turner and Danny Wilson have always placed a big emphasis on success in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and both have won the competition outright in previous years (1988 for Wolves and 2003 for Bristol City respectively).
“With this in mind, it is nice to be able to commemorate the achievements of their current sides by awarding them with our Team of the Round awards.”
Johnstone’s. Bringing colour to the beautiful game.
