Area Finals produce three unforgettable finishes

The Johnstone’s Paint Trophy has saved the best ‘til last in this season’s Ultimate Finish competition, with three stunning strikes from the area finals battling it out for the goal of the round award.

February 2012

It might almost be the last stage, but it certainly wasn’t the least in terms of quality, as displayed by a trio of marksmen who will now be hopeful of some silverware for their efforts.

Alan Connell’s precision header for Swindon Town is shortlisted, along with Scott Boden’s close range finish for Chesterfield against Oldham Athletic, to cap off a fine team goal.

Robbie Simpson might not be gracing the final, but his long range screamer for the Latics in the same game also makes the cut.

Supporters will be able to view each memorable goal on the official Johnstone’s Paint Trophy website before casting their votes, with the most popular goal winning.

And if the incentive of presenting the winning player with their Ultimate Finish award isn’t enough, the lucky fan picked at random will also win an iPod Nano for his or her efforts.

The shortlisted players are:

GOAL A

ALAN CONNELL

SWINDON 1-0 Barnet

GOAL B

SCOTT BOWDEN

CHESTERFIELD 2-1 Oldham

GOAL C

ROBBIE SIMPSON

Chesterfield 2-1 OLDHAM

The best goal will be announced on the website after the March 19 closing date and all fans that vote for the same winning goal will be shortlisted into the prize draw.

And as an added incentive, fans of the Ultimate Finish winner will be entitled to redeem a ‘Just Rewards’ voucher enabling them to collect a free goodie bag from any Johnstone’s or Johnstone’s Leyland Decorating Centre within a 20 mile radius of the winning player’s parent club.

The goodie bag containing official footballs and other memorabilia is available for all the Ultimate Finish winner’s fans with any purchase of Johnstone’s, Leyland or Fat Hog products.

Johnstone’s Paint Trophy’s sponsorship manager Teresa Hardwick said: “With so much riding on the area final fixtures, the teams could be forgiven for scoring a scrappy goal or two along the way.

“However, this wasn’t the case from the action we feasted our eyes over. All three goals scored were wonderful for their own reasons.

“Scott Boden’s strike capped off a great counter attack, Alan Connell’s header was a brilliantly executed finish, while Robbie Simpson showed great power and poise to score his.

“We are glad to be placing the decision in the hands of the fans, as it is a tough one to call.”

Supporters are also being invited to stand by for an end of season Ultimate Finish award, featuring the best goals from the entire season. A Playstation 3 with the latest Fifa game is up for grabs as the overall prize.
