Di Canio: This is an opportunity

There’s one simple rule with Paolo Di Canio – win every game. That’s why the man who scored the Premier League’s greatest goal of the last decade has made such big impact in his first managerial job at Swindon Town.

November 2011

Renowned in his playing days for his flamboyant style and unpredictable temperament, Di Canio has added some extra-spice into League Two with his team’s performances and memorable press conferences.

But during our brief chat, it’s clear that the Italian’s demeanour is designed to inspire those around him to win, and win with style.

“I view every game as an opportunity. I view the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy as an opportunity to play in a fantastic stadium. I want to win every game.”

Swindon currently occupy seventh place in League Two and have performed particularly well at home this season, only losing one of eight games at the County Ground. But Di Canio’s men have struggled away from home, losing five and only winning three. Despite this, the former West Ham icon sees reason for optimism.

“It takes time to gel as a team and I think we are doing that now if you look at our performances. Our players now understand how to use space on the pitch effectively. They now know how I want them to play. We will only get better.”

The 43-year-old is also a strong advocate of balancing technical ability with a winning mentality, something he believes his team have achieved in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

“I do not see the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy as an inconvenience. It is a chance to get to Wembley and win a trophy, the reason why we become players and managers. It motivates the players too, they have ability, but they also have the desire to take opportunities.

“We will have to be motivated and confident against AFC Wimbledon in the Quarter Final, they are a strong physical side so we need to impose ourselves and style of play on the game.”

Swindon Town take on AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday 8th November at 7.30pm.

Johnstone’s. Bringing colour to the beautiful game.
