Flynn and tonic for Bradford City skipper
Bradford City might have been knocked out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy for another season, but they have exited the competition with yet another prestigious accolade to their name.
Bradford City might have been knocked out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy for another season, but they have exited the competition with yet another prestigious accolade to their name.
With two Team of the Round awards safely tucked in the trophy cabinet, skipper Michael Flynn has now netted an Ultimate Finish award for his goal at Bramall Lane in his side’s area quarter final.
Hundreds of Bradford City fans voted for the captain’s long range screamer, which cancelled out a similarly classy finish from Matty Phillips for the Blades.
The goal beat Oliver Risser’s goal for Swindon Town into second place, with Phillips himself finishing third.
Michael said: “I must admit, I’m a bit surprised to win this award but it is a great honour to do so. There were some great strikes on the shortlist so I’d like to really thank everyone who voted for me to win.
“I’m obviously a bit disappointed at the moment that we couldn’t get to the Area Final – I was gutted to miss the match through suspension – but I think we can be proud of our achievements in the competition this season.
“The night at Sheffield United was a very special one for everyone connected with the club, and this award will now make it a little bit more special for me when I look back and remember the game.”
Michael will now be presented with his prize from lifelong Bradford City fan David Wignall of Blackshaw Drive, Bradford, who was picked at random as the winner and can look forward to receiving an iPod nano.
David said: “It is sad to be out of the competition now, but winning this prize has cheered me up no end.
“We will all remember the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy fondly as we’ve had some great results away from home against our Yorkshire rivals.
“Hopefully we can transfer this form into the league now and push on up the table.”
Johnstone’s Paint Trophy’s sponsorship manager Teresa Hardwick said: “We were at the game at Bramall Lane and immediately thought Michael’s strike would stand a very good chance of winning our Ultimate Finish award.
“We were certainly proved right and the goal has been one of the most popular winners we have ever had.
“We’d like to wish Bradford City all the best for the rest of the season now. They have embraced the trophy from the very first whistle and have given us so many highlights to reflect on fondly.
“We wish Michael, his team mates and manager Phil Parkinson all the best for the rest of the season.”
There’s an Ultimate Finish Award for each round of the competition. Fans will have the opportunity to vote the goal of the round and one lucky entrant will win an iPod nano.
After the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final, all fans will then have the opportunity to vote for the ‘Ultimate Finish of the Season’.
The winning goalscorer will be presented with a ‘Johnstone’s Paint Ultimate Finish of the Season Award’ and one lucky entrant will win a fantastic Sony Playstation 3 console with the latest Fifa game.
Johnstone's. Bringing colour to the beautiful game.
