The 29-year-old produced a superb 40-yard shot in the Magpies' 3-1 defeat to Chesterfield, winning the hearts of the vast majority of fans who voted on the Johnstone's Paint Trophy website.

Reflecting on his award, Hawley said: "I'm absolutely delighted that my goal was voted as the round's Ultimate Finish, especially considering the quality of the other nine goals short-listed. We're disappointed that we lost the game, but I suppose this is a silver lining.

"It was just instinctive when I had the ball played to me, I created some space to hit the ball and you know as soon as you pull the trigger whether it's on target. Luckily for me, my shot beat the keeper."

He will now be presented with his award from Notts County fan Matthew Taylor, who was picked at random as the winner and can look forward to receiving an iPod Nano.

Johnstone’s Paint Trophy’s sponsorship manager Teresa Hardwick said: “We were impressed with the quality of goals from the first round, but in all truth the goals from round two were even better, we'd like to thank all the fans who voted and congratulate Karl on winning the award.

“It was a great goal and I'm sure it’s one that Notts County fans will remember for a long time to come."

The Ultimate Finish video for the Area Quarter Finals will be on the website from November 18. Fans will have the opportunity to vote for the top goal of the round from the five shortlisted and one lucky entrant will win an iPod Nano.

After the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final, all fans will then have the opportunity to vote for the ‘Ultimate Finish of the Season’.

The winning goalscorer will be presented with a ‘Johnstone’s Paint Ultimate Finish of the Season Award’ and one lucky entrant will win a fantastic Sony Playstation 3 console with the latest Fifa game.
