Rochdale still on course for world cup win!

Rochdale’s dream of lifting the ‘World Cup’ lives on for another round, courtesy of a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy triumph that means more to Dale fans than most other sets of supporters.

October 2011

For most football followers, a trip to the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy would mean a heck of a lot, offering a day out at the Home of Football that they would never forget.

For Spotland regulars however, a triumph in the competition would probably mean that little bit more.

The club has only ever been to Wembley Stadium once in their history and boasts the unenviable record of spending the longest time in the bottom division of the league, playing 36 consecutive seasons from 1974 to 2010.

With the manager who masterminded their eventual promotion in 2009/10 leaving for local rivals Barnsley too, it is safe to say that Rochdale fans are insatiable for success.

Bob Morrisey and Eddie Earnshaw said: “Winning the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy would be like winning the World Cup.

“We are happy to stay in the league this season, so to do well in the trophy would be unbelievable for us. It is our equivalent of the World Cup.”

Melanie Holt and David Clough were similarly excited about a run in the competition.

David, who has been a fan for 50 years, said: “We went to Wembley for the play off-final in 2008, but we would really love to go again.”

Colin Boughey, Mavis Shellard, Keith Walker and Jordan Fishburn added: “We have got a new manager here with little experience, so all we want to do is stay in the league this season.

“We would absolutely love to win the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy too. That would be extremely special and something we would all treasure.”

Robert Smith, Lynn Smith and Cameron Lukash said: “We love the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and are thrilled to get through.

“There is a really nice family feel about the competition so the longer we stay in the trophy, the better.”

Johnstone’s. Bringing colour to the beautiful game.
