David Mellor, aged 18, is one of a number of talented youngsters to make a name for himself at Boundary Park and is the latest inductee into the trophy’s ‘Colourful Generation’ recognition section.
Along with Carl Winchester, David has impressed greatly this season and is featuring regularly for the first team in League One.
The youngster is versatile, equally adept in defence and midfield, and if first impressions last, then he is a player to remember for a long, long time.
He made his debut in a pre-season game against Blackpool and announced himself on the professional scene with a 25 yard screamer.
Then on his full league debut against Scunthorpe United, he crashed home a similarly classy strike from all of 20 yards.
And the best fact of all was that the first was scored with his left peg and the second with his right, suggesting he has the rare commodity of being comfortable on either foot.
Oldham Athletic manager Paul Dickov confirmed that a number of scouts from top flight clubs were having a look at the youngsters in his team, including David.
He said: “When you've got 18 and 19 year-olds playing in the first team week in week out, it's going to attract interest.”
