Southampton go marching in

Southampton gave their massive away following something to cheer about at stadium:MK with a priceless 1-0 win over MK Dons in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy southern area final.

January 2010

Backed by 3,000 fanatical supporters, the Saints secured a vital win courtesy of Michail Antonio’s fine first half strike.

The on-loan Reading wide man was a constant threat throughout the game and his goal was no more than the Saints deserved for their first half showing, where Southampton also went close through Jose Fonte and Adam Lallana.

But the Dons were a transformed side in the second half, thanks in part to a trio of substitutions and a probable pep talk from manager Paul Ince.

As they gained a foothold, the game turned spicy, culminating in a red card for Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin who got rattled from the close attentions of Stephen Gleeson, pushing the Irishman in the face.

It was then a case of the Kelvin Davis show as the 2008 trophy winners sensed an equalizer.

The Saints keeper somehow got down to save a rasping Jermaine Easter drive and was then indebted to the post when substitute Jude Stirling whipped in another teasing cross which Aaron Wilbraham almost diverted home.

Alan Pardew’s men held on for the win and while Southampton’s supporters were singing about Wembley, MK Dons manager will be aware that his side is far from out of it.

He said: “We’ve got to stay confident. With the quality players we’ve got, we still have every chance.”

Johnstone’s Paint Trophy sponsorship manager Teresa Hardwick said: “We’re not sure what the odds were on two away wins from the two area finals, but they certainly make for a pair of fascinating return legs in February. Everything is still to play for!”

Johnstone’s. Bringing colour to the beautiful game.
